Deaf & Hard of Hearing (DHH) Itinerant

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Itinerant Program serves students ages 3 years to 22 years who are diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing.

Specially trained teachers with a credential in the area of DHH function as part of the home school district's educational team. Assessment, including functional hearing assessment, development of appropriate IEPs and recommendation of appropriate equipment begins the process.

The DHH teacher works with the student within the school environment including general education and special education classes. IEP goals are focused on the development of compensatory strategies needed to be successful in school and life.

The program also analyzes and recommends environmental supports and trains staff in strategies needed throughout the school day to guarantee student success. These itinerant services may be direct or consultative.

Lessons regarding equipment usage and ongoing monitoring of equipment are provided by the program. The services may include training in speech-reading , use of sign, total communication and oral-aural strategies as appropriate for the needs of each student.
