Orientation & Mobility

Orientation & Mobility (O&M) instruction is available to those visually impaired students who have been assessed and demonstrate a need in this area. O&M is a two-fold process. Orientation is knowing where you are, what is around you, where you want to go and what steps you must take to reach your destination. Mobility is purposeful, independent movement that gets one where he or she wants to go safely and efficiently.

O&M goals may include the following, depending on individual need and ability:

  • Accurate body image and spatial concepts.
  • Basic human-guide techniques.
  • Environmental concepts.
  • Use of all senses including remaining vision.
  • Cane techniques.
  • Residential and business travel, including street crossings.
  • Use of public transportation.
  • Appropriate social skills when in public.

O&M is taught by credentialed specialists who may have a Masters Degree in Special Education. Instructors typically work with one student at a time. Lessons may take place in a variety of settings, ranging from the classroom to the community. Materials used can include canes, monoculars, sunglasses, hats, and tactile models and maps. Parents are encouraged to observe lessons and participate in the planning of goals.

The purpose of Orientation & Mobility is to teach each student to travel as safely and independently as possible. For some this will mean less dependence on others, while for others, it will mean total independence.
