WorkAbility I (WAI) provides support in the area of transition to the
world of work for staff, students and families. Paid work experience
in the community for a limited number of students is a feature of our
program.
- WorkAbility provides staff, parents and students consultation
concerning transition issues, and can provide curriculum and ideas
for instruction in the classroom.
- WorkAbility staff visits campuses on a
weekly basis and are available to meet teachers and students during
this time regarding career awareness
and exploration, along with job skills training. A ten-lesson curriculum
is often co-taught with classroom teachers.
- Also, WorkAbility staff
are available for IEPs, in special situations, and can give instructions/training
to staff on the ITP.
- WorkAbility
provides outside agency information and contact names/numbers,
as well as classroom speakers in the area of transition.
- WorkAbility
provides fieldtrips to city colleges or businesses/industries.
- WorkAbility
can help to connect staff and students to different services offered
through the community and school district such as job
shadowing,
ROP and other youth provider programs.
WAI does provide funds for up to 75 hours of paid work experience, but
certain requirements and limitations are involved. Each site needs to
determine the students that are eligible and in need of the work experience
portion of WAI.
- Each comprehensive high school site is given a certain
number of subsidized work slots (usually 30 to 35) for paid work
experience. Alternative/Specialized
programs are given subsidized work slots in proportion to the number
of high school students enrolled.
- Special education staff at
each site determines as a team, which students are most in need
of, paid work experience. These names will be given
to the Site Coordinator who will then pass the names on the WAI
staff.
- Seniors are first priorities, followed by juniors, etc. (Students
must be able to work on their own, unless in a supervised program like
FACTS).
- The WAI staff or Site Coordinator will meet with these students
and provide paperwork to enroll these students. After their paperwork
is
processed,
a work experience site will then be located. Employment is not
guaranteed. The employer has final say whether to accept the student
or not.
- Students
under the age of 16 are encouraged to do service-learning hours
(a requirement for graduation in some districts or volunteer hours
to
help gain work skills. Many worksites do not allow students under
16 to work at their job sites.)
- WAI staff/Site Coordinators job develop
for student worksites.
- WAI staff/Site
Coordinators regularly monitor worksites.
- Workability staff/Site
Coordinators are responsible for processing timesheets and submitting
payroll for payment to students. Students are
responsible
to deliver timesheets to Site Coordinator/WAI Staff on time.
